BIO International Convention 2026:
Reflections on Collaboration, Innovation and Australia’s Global Opportunity
Attending BIO International Convention 2026 in San Diego for the first time, I quickly understood why it is regarded as the world’s premier biotechnology partnering event.
But what surprised me most wasn’t the scale. It was the energy.
From the moment our leadership team arrived, the convention centre was alive with possibility. Conversations were happening everywhere, in formal partnering meetings, at country pavilions, across exhibition booths, in coffee queues and while navigating the seemingly endless walkways connecting thousands of delegates from around the world.
In many ways, BIO represents the very best of our industry.
More than 5,000 companies from 57 countries came together, bringing diverse technologies, ambitions and perspectives. Yet beneath the diversity of science, business models and therapeutic areas was a shared purpose: improving human health and bringing better treatments to patients faster.
For me, that was the defining takeaway. Innovation may drive biotechnology, but collaboration is what moves it forward.
The power of partnership is alive and well
There is often discussion about the challenges facing biotech globally. Funding cycles remain difficult, development pathways are becoming more complex and competition is increasingly intense.
Yet BIO 2026 felt surprisingly optimistic.
Everywhere we turned there was a willingness to connect, exchange ideas and explore opportunities. Whether companies were seeking investment, licensing opportunities, clinical development support, manufacturing partners or strategic collaborators, there was a genuine openness to conversation.
Across the week, our team participated in more than 25 formal partnering meetings, alongside countless informal discussions that proved just as valuable. Those conversations reinforced an important truth: while science continues to evolve rapidly, success in biotech is still built on relationships.
Trust, expertise and collaboration remain some of the industry’s most valuable currencies.
Australia is attracting attention, but we can tell our story better
One of the strongest themes emerging throughout the week was the growing recognition of Australia as a strategic destination for clinical development.
International delegates consistently acknowledged Australia’s strengths:
- World-class clinical trial infrastructure
- A globally recognised CTN scheme
- High-quality, internationally accepted clinical data
- Strong first-in-human capabilities
- Diverse patient populations
- Globally respected investigators and research institutions
- A stable regulatory and geopolitical environment
- Expanding advanced manufacturing capability
Many were already familiar with these advantages.
What was equally evident, however, was that Australia remains somewhat under-recognised globally for the depth of science and innovation taking place within our ecosystem.
One comment-from a panel discussion stayed with me: “Australia is more impressive once you’re there.” They were reflecting on the depth of science being conducted in Australia, and the infrastructure that underpins that science in our many world-renowned medical research institutes.
That comment resonated with me. The quality of the science is not the issue.
Visibility is.
Australia consistently punches above its weight across the full research and development pathway. Yet there remains an opportunity for us to be more confident and coordinated in telling our full story internationally.
Bridging innovation and execution
For me, BIO 2026 reinforced something I have long believed: great science alone is not enough. The biotechnology sector is rich with innovation, breakthrough discoveries and promising new therapies. Yet the journey from scientific promise to patient impact is complex, capital intensive and filled with critical decision points.
These conversations also reinforced why our work at Molecule2Market matters. Across the conference, it was clear that many biotechnology companies are navigating increasingly complex development pathways while balancing finite capital and ambitious timelines. Helping sponsors make confident clinical decisions isn’t simply about operational delivery. It’s about combining scientific expertise with practical guidance at the moments that matter most.
Many of the conversations we had at BIO 2026 reflected an industry-wide shift. Sponsors are increasingly seeking partners who bring strategic thinking, senior clinical expertise and hands-on leadership alongside operational execution. In a capital-constrained environment, making the right decisions early can be just as important as moving quickly.

Team Australia stood out
One of the most encouraging aspects of BIO 2026 was seeing Team Australia in action. Across industry, government, research institutes and support organisations there was a genuine spirit of collaboration.
Austrade, AUScelerate, state government agencies and numerous Australian companies worked collectively to showcase the strength of our ecosystem rather than competing for attention.
That collaborative mindset is one of Australia’s distinguishing characteristics. It is difficult to quantify, but international delegates notice it. The willingness to share knowledge, make introductions and work together is something many countries admire and, increasingly, something that differentiates Australia as a partner of choice.
Speed matters, but it’s no longer enough
Another important observation from BIO 2026 was that sponsors are no longer focused purely on accelerating timelines. Speed remains important. After all, time directly impacts capital efficiency.
But what sponsors consistently discussed was the need to combine speed with quality, agility, expertise and strategic guidance.
Biotechnology companies are operating in an increasingly complex environment. Investors expect disciplined use of capital. Development pathways are more sophisticated. Regulatory expectations continue to evolve.
As a result, companies are looking beyond service providers and seeking true partners, those who can bring experience, challenge thinking, solve problems early and help preserve valuable resources. This shift presents a significant opportunity for Australia, and for organisations able to combine scientific excellence with practical execution.
The future is arriving faster than ever
Innovation was everywhere at BIO 2026. Discussions ranged from AI-enabled drug development and advanced manufacturing through to organoids, non-animal models, personalised medicine and novel therapeutic platforms.
What struck me was not any single technology, but the pace at which innovation is moving. The traditional boundaries between discovery, development, technology and data science are rapidly disappearing.
Today’s breakthrough technologies are increasingly being developed through interdisciplinary collaboration. For all of us working within clinical development, adaptability is becoming as important as expertise.
Seventy kilometres of perspective
By the end of the week, my Garmin had clocked nearly 70 kilometres in steps across the convention centre and San Diego.
While my feet certainly noticed, so did my perspective. BIO 2026 reinforced just how dynamic, resilient and globally connected our industry has become. It reminded me that transformative healthcare outcomes are never created by a single company, idea, investigator or technology.
They emerge from ecosystems, from partnerships and from people willing to share expertise and work together towards a common goal.
Most importantly, BIO 2026 reinforced my belief that Australia has an increasingly important role to play in that future, and that companies like Molecule2Market have an important responsibility in connecting global innovation with Australia’s world-class clinical development ecosystem.
The opportunity ahead is not simply to participate in the global biotechnology ecosystem.
It is to help lead it.
And that’s an energising proposition.
